Picture this... An indoor market bustling with people and activity, vendor stalls bursting with local products, flowers, chocolates, and cheeses, the aroma of fresh baked goods, spices, and roasting coffee, colorful displays of Oregon fruits and vegetables, inviting gathering areas filled with people enjoying a freshly prepared meal, a cup of coffee, students on a field trip learning about Oregon agriculture, international visitors enjoying a cooking demonstration...
This is the James Beard Public Market.
With its opening projected for 2025, James Beard Public Market will invigorate downtown Portland and catalyze future food cultures in an indoor/outdoor venue open seven days a week. The market will offer a unique and authentic experience with its diverse array of vendors featuring fresh produce, local dairy products, artisan cheese, local fish, meats and game, fresh flowers, herbs, and value-added food products—as well as coffee, beer, wine and distilled spirits.
Open year-round, the venue will be occupied by locally owned vendors selling their locally grown produce and food products with the express objective of encouraging healthy eating for people of all cultural and economic backgrounds. Some vendors will be well-established, household names, while others will be emerging ventures supported by the market’s food entrepreneurship programs with a priority on disadvantaged communities. As a market for all, customers from all income levels, from every ethnic group and from every part of the region will find top quality foods sold by these locally owned small businesses.
